Abike Jotayo Anderson

Storytelling & Crafts

Abike is a multidimensional artist who has actively participated in the tri-state areas’ cultural fabric for more than thirty years. Of African American heritage, Abike’s family hails from the Richmond area in Virginia. Abike uses art, traditional and contemporary stories of Africa’s oral tradition to motivate youth and seniors to value their cultural heritage. She is dedicated to the dissemination and preservation of Africa’s oral traditions. Her storytelling program “Talking brought me here, listening made me stay” is a journey through the diaspora. She has used her playwriting skills to illustrate social justice issues. Many of her piece shave sparked important dialogue on youth violence, the lack of public services, housing, job training and the need of intergenerational programs.
