Ama Codjoe,
West African, Caribbean and Contemporary Dance
Ama Codjoe is originally from
Youngstown, Ohio with roots in Memphis, and Accra, Ghana. She
received her BA in English from Brown University, and was a
Presidential Fellow at Ohio State University where she received
her M.F.A. in Dance Performance. She has performed works by
contemporary choreographers such as Rennie Harris and classic
modern dance pioneers such as Pearl E. Primus. Her performance,
research, and community work center around the question: “What
is the role of dance in black liberation movements?” Ama
currently teaches at El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice.
She also facilitates teacher trainings for educators and
teaching artists. Ama believes that dance is inherently
political, and that through teaching dance students of African
descent can gain a sense of their body as a temple and a weapon
to make moves for social change. Through celebrating culture in
dance Ama and her students resist oppression, racism and
confining definitions of beauty.
