Jose
Figueroa, Afro-Dominican & Haitian Music & Dance
Jose Figueroa is the director of
Grupo Kalunga Neg Mawon, a musical dance ensemble that
preserves aspects of African tradition and identity existing in
Quisqueya-Ayiti, known today as the Dominican Republic and The
Republic of Haiti. Jose Figueroa has been a teaching artist
since 1993 in African Diaspora cultural arts groups such as Asa
Dife, Nego Gato Brazilian Ensemble, Pa’lo Monte and the Rock
Steady Crew. A talented dancer, Jose has graced the stages of
Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and taught at Fazel’s dance
studio and various public schools throughout New York City. Jose
continually inspires hard to reach youth because he’s not afraid
to rely on his past as a former gang member, helping young men
transcend the code of the streets and create a code of
self-respect and cultural value.
