DeShawn Banks, West African Drumming
Began playing percussion for children
after studying music and jazz with CUNY. Shawn Banks can be
found at any given time leading drum workshops for the Brooklyn
Public Libraries, NYC Parks and Recreation Dept., the Crown
Heights Youth Collective and other private events. He currently
enjoys working with Family of Services After- School Program,
and other arts and education programs throughout the city. He is
also the facilitator for the Long Island University Percussion
Ensemble. Many of musicians and artist have welcomed Shawn to
the bandstand, appearing at New York’s Blue Note, SOB’s, Central
Park Summerstage, Lincoln Center, and many other venues within
New York. Currently, Shawn is in the process of developing a
music appreciation curriculum, which displays the exchange of
influences between the historic events and the correlated music.
Shawn focuses on motivating and uplifting the children of our
communities using the knowledge of our positive elders and
ancestors.
